WMS
Warehouse Management System
A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is software that controls and optimises the day-to-day operations inside a warehouse or distribution centre. It manages inbound goods receipt, putaway to storage locations, replenishment, order picking, packing, shipping, and cycle counting. A modern WMS is scan-driven, tracks inventory in real time at location and lot level, and directs warehouse operators step by step through each task via handheld or wearable devices.
WMS software replaces spreadsheets, paper pick lists, and ERP inventory modules that only track stock at site level. It reduces picking errors, improves inventory accuracy, and increases throughput by directing operators along the shortest path and enforcing scan validation at every step.
A WMS integrates with ERP (for master data and financial postings), OMS (for order flow), carriers (for label generation and manifests), and shop-floor equipment such as conveyors, sorters, and print-and-apply systems.
