    Pick and pack

    The process end to end, the five strategies and what each suits, and the four controls that decide whether the right box leaves the building.

    Pick and pack is the core fulfilment process: an operator retrieves the items on a customer order from their storage locations, and those items are packed into a shipment with the correct documentation and carrier label. Everything else in outbound — allocation, slotting, carrier selection — exists to make those two steps cheap and reliable.

    The six steps, and what each one invites

    Picking strategies

    Strategy follows order profile, not warehouse size. Most operations end up running two or three at once — batch for the small-line e-commerce stream, single-order for the awkward B2B ones.

    Single-order picking
    One picker walks one order from start to finish. Suits: Low volume, large or highly variable orders, or anything needing careful handling.
    Batch picking
    One trip collects the same SKU for many orders, sorted to orders afterwards. Suits: High volume of small orders with heavy SKU overlap — classic e-commerce.
    Zone picking
    Each picker owns an area; orders are assembled from the zones they touch. Suits: Large sites where travel dominates, and operations with specialised areas.
    Wave picking
    Work is released in timed blocks aligned to carrier cut-offs or dock schedules. Suits: Operations whose day is shaped by outbound deadlines rather than order arrival.
    Cluster picking
    A cart with separated positions collects several orders in a single walk. Suits: Small-line orders where the sorting step after batch picking is not worth its cost.

    The four controls that hold accuracy

    Scan validation on every line, slotting that separates confusable items, directed travel so nobody improvises a route, and a weight or count check before the carton closes.     What a WMS changes

    Paper can run pick and pack. What it cannot do is validate at the moment of the pick, direct the walk, or record what actually happened rather than what someone wrote down afterwards.
