Warehouse Slotting

Warehouse slotting is the practice of deciding where each SKU should live inside the warehouse — which zone, aisle, rack, and bin — based on its physical size, weight, order velocity, seasonality, handling constraints, and affinity with other SKUs. Good slotting shortens pick paths, reduces congestion, and lowers ergonomic strain, directly improving throughput and cost per order.

Slotting is typically re-evaluated periodically (quarterly or per season) as SKU velocity changes. Advanced operations run continuous slotting, letting the WMS suggest moves as demand shifts.

Fast-movers go to golden-zone locations near pack, slow-movers to less accessible shelves, oversize to bulk racking, and hazmat to compliant areas.
