SKU

A Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) is the unique internal identifier for a distinct product variant that a business stocks and sells. Every combination of product, size, colour, packaging, and any other attribute that has to be tracked separately gets its own SKU. SKUs are the atomic unit of inventory: stock levels, prices, dimensions, and bin locations are all held per SKU.

SKUs are distinct from EAN/UPC barcodes (which are external, manufacturer-assigned) and from product-family codes. A single product family can have dozens or hundreds of SKUs.

Poor SKU discipline — duplicated codes, missing variants, inconsistent naming — is a common root cause of inventory inaccuracy.
